Tonight: Thurston Moore is playing the Smell, and here’s hoping the regulars get in. … Big rawk shows all over: At the three-day tattoo to-do Musink at the O.C. Fairgrounds, the headliners the next three days are Rev. Horton Heat, Atreyu and Danzig; Pennywise rocks the Glass House; the Dropkick Murphys and Civet play a sold-out Palladium; After Midnight Project is at the Key Club; and Murder by Death kills it at the Troubadour. … The Faint’s Joel Petersen, as Broken Spindles, brings his twitchy electro-punk to the Echo. … At the Hotel Cafe, it’s a big bill with Ragsy, Deerheart and Andy Clockwise. … The free shows at Home restaurant in Silver Lake continue, with Sara Lov performing. … Donavon Frankenreiter is joined by Gary Jules at the Roxy. … And at the House of Blues, old favorites Dada do a show rescheduled from December, while up-and-coming songsmith Michael Zapruder plays the HOB’s Foundation Room.
Saturday: Sean Nelson [pictured] has long been a favorite. His work in the wrongly-categorized-as-a-one-hit-wonder Harvey Danger is brilliant, as was his tour of duty in the Long Winters, and Nelson’s a fine journo with acting/screenwriting chops to boot. On Saturday at the Largo at the Coronet’s Little Room, he will perform songs from his (unreleased) Harry Nilsson covers project, “Nelson Sings Nilsson,” LAist just posted a great interview with Nelson in advance of his visit to L.A. … Irish songstress Lisa Hannigan is at the Troubadour. … And it’s singer-songwriters in a bigger room, with Joshua Radin and Meiko at the Music Box @ Fonda. … Bobb Bruno has his EP release show at someplace called Betalevel in Chinatown. … Grails is down from Portland to headline Spaceland. … And at the Scene in Glendale, there’s a Bring Back Indie show featuring, among others, Go West Young Man and Ballerina Black.
Sunday: Parental units will want to take their little ones to the Kidrockers matinee show at 1 p.m. at the Echo; the Broken West and Whispertown 2000 perform. … Yacht brings the party to the Roxy. … Pic Vicious heads up a fun bill at the Viper Room. … VoiceVoices plays a show at the Smell that features, among others, War Tapes. …

“I am in the studio writing songs with Dave McCracken (co-writer of F.E.A.R. and Dolphins Were Monkeys long time collaborator) with a plan to go to Japan in March to record it in a friends studio in Oknawa and release in mid-August.”
Sony BMG intends to mark the 20th anniversary of the release of The Stone Roses 1989 self-titled debut LP with a Box Set version, set to be released June this year. John Leckie, who produced the album, has re-mastered the record.
I’m looking forward to see Michael Zapruder tonight at The Foundation Room at House of Blues. It’ll be interesting how he presents his songs in a live format.
