Tonight in L.A.: The 88, New York Dolls, the Virgins

In their early days, the 88 used to get compared a lot to the Kinks. Now, as they showed on last year’s “Not Only … But Also,” they’ve come into their own, and three albums into their career they can flex their musical muscles any which way. Tonight at the Key Club, the L.A. outfit will play two sets at the Key Club – at 9:15 they will cover Bob Dylan’s 44-year-old masterpieece “Highway 61 Revisited” and follow with a set of their own material. … The Manchester Orchestra hits the Troubadour behind their fine sophomore release “Mean Everything to Nothing.” … The Virgins are back in town, playing the El Rey Theatre with buzzy NYC quartet Lissy Trullie and SoCal’s Anya Marina. … The Kills (along with the Horrors) swing through the area again too – tonight at the Glass House in Pomona and on Friday at the Music Box @ Fonda. … The New York Dolls, supported by the Cliks, strut their stuff at the Music Box @ Fonda. … And there’s a huge local bill at the Roxy featuring Funeral Party, Venus Infers, the Tender Box and Star Parts. … Also: Year Long Disaster at the Knitting Factory; BLK JKS at the Echo; Glasser at Spaceland; the F. Scott Band at Restavrant’s residency at the Silverlake Lounge; Cola-Cola at the Scene in Glendale; and Jim Hanft at the Hotel Cafe.
