Tonight in L.A.: The Minor Canon, Olin, the Movies

[Happy birthday to Fabrizio Moretti of the Strokes, all of 29 years old today. His side project, Little Joy, will be in town later this week – Thursday at the Detroit Bar and Friday at the Troubadour. Now, on to tonight …]

themovies8How difficult is it to support good local bands in L.A.? Damned hard on nights like tonight, when fans will be pulled in no fewer than four different directions. Let’s start with a couple album release shows: The Minor Canon [interview] celebrates its new recording, “Emptiness Is Form,” with a show at Spaceland, and as serious as the music is, you should get some levity in the form of the opening act, comedian Matt Dwyer. … At the Echo, country-folk quintet Olin and the Moon [interview] toast the release of “Terrible Town” with support from Leslie & the Badgers, Deep Sea Diver and Eagle and Talon. … There are rumors that tonight’s show at Bordello might be the final outing for longtime Silver Lake favorites the Movies – could it be? “Not necessarily,” says one of the principals. … At the Silverlake Lounge, the good bands are stacked four deep; the Capshuns, Robotanists, Vanaprasta and the Black Kites are on the bill. … And Klum is rocking downtown’s La Cita. … Also: Raining Jane at the Hotel Cafe; Blackened Fest at the House of Blues; Mike Stinson at the Redwood Bar; Kate Crash at the Viper Room; and Diana Gone Wrong at the Dragonfly.
