Tonight in L.A.: Fun., Bat for Lashes, Billy Corgan

funI’ve been to a lot of residency Mondays at Spaceland over the years, and tonight’s lineup, front to back, rivals any I’ve seen. Residents Local Natives could probably pack the place themselves, but they have two other great SoCal bands on board – the Henry Clay People and Aushua. Not to mention: Fun., who are not to be missed. Fun (they use a period after their name) is the new project of Nate Ruess of the Format (whom I really liked back in 2006), Anathallo’s Andrew Dost and Steel Train’s Jack Antonoff. Fun’s new album “Aim and Ignite” is a giddy mix of 1970s pop influences – you’ll probably recognize ELO the most – and fans of L.A. Eastside scene are likely to hear it and think: “Damn, this really reminds me of Castledoor.” Yep. Early arrival tonight at Spaceland is heartily encouraged. … That’s not to diminish the other great residencies that end their August runs tonight – the Moon Upstairs supports the finale of the Growlers’ residency at the Echo, Lower Heaven ends its Silverlake Lounge run with support from the Meek. … Also: Billy Corgan at the Hotel Cafe (sold out); Bat for Lashes and Other Lives at the Music Box @ Fonda (sold out); Black Joe Lewis at the Troubadour; Dredg at the El Rey Theatre; Susan Marshall at the Redwood Bar; [my calendar was wrong, Ms. Marshall is not at the Redwood tonight, sorry] and Daily-Daily at the Viper Room.
