Tonight in L.A.: Edward Sharpe, Citizen Cope, the 88

[Happy birthday, Joan Jett …]

People still ask me what the deal is with Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros and whether I believe Alex Ebert’s transformation from dance-rocker to hippie guru. Here’s the story I wrote for the L.A. Times in May [I snapped the photo during the Times shoot] in which Ebert talked about his Ima Robot days and explained who Edward Sharpe is. And, yes, I believe it. “Up From Below” is an excellent debut album (if you haven’t heard it, you might check out the free downloads from the band’s Daytrotter session), and with songs like that Ebert could dress like the PC guy from the Mac commercials, as far as I’m concerned, and I’d listen. The group, recently a hit on Letterman, plays a sold-out show tonight at the El Rey Theatre. … Also: Jackson Browne does a benefit at the Wiltern; Citizen Cope at the House of Blues; the second of Rival Sons’ three-night stint at the Viper Room; a great supporting bill for the 88‘s residency at the Spaceland, with” Adeline & the Philistines, AM and Extra playing; Pink Mountaintops at the Echo; IO Echo, Funeral Party and Rainbow Arabia at the Troubadour; Seaspin at the Silverlake Lounge; Chris Garneau and Soko at the Bootleg Theater; and Royal Bangs at Cinespace.
