Tonight in L.A.: Mere Mortals, Black Francis, Links

[Happy 30th birthday today to Sara Bareilles. Here’s how to get your week started …]

Links-coopergrossThe headliners at month’s free residencies should be familiar faces to Buzz Bands readers. Here’s a refresher course: Mere Mortals, freshly returned from a successful tour of Japan, bring their gritty Britpop to at Spaceland, where I hear that the “special guest” tonight will be Black Francis – performing with Grand Duchy, the project he launched this year with his wife, keyboardist/bassist Violet Clark. … Links [pictured], whose taut, bluesy rock caught our ears this spring, headline the Silverlake Lounge (Repeater and Giant State support). Links just finished up a new EP, “Echo Dogs,” and their show last month at the Roxy seemed to augur bigger things for the band. …”  And it should be fun at the Echo, where the Manimal Vinyl label will host the residency this month – first up tonight is the Polyamorous Affair, who are every bit as fun as their videos. … Meanwhile, Rachel Cantu celebrates the release of her new album, “Far and Wide,” with a shot at the Bootleg Theater. … Also: Morrissey plays to a sold-out Fox Theatre in Pomona; One Eskimo hits the Hotel Cafe; and Signals play Pehrspace.
