It’s one of those nights to rekindle old friendships. The Good Listeners [pictured], the L.A. duo of Nathan Khyber and Clark Stiles, just released their third album, “Don’t Quit Your Daydream,” a record conceived on the road and to be accompanied by a documentary about two musicians who travel the country in an RV. I took an immediate shine to the duo’s first album, “Ojai,” back in the day and the follow-up “Crane’s Point Lodge” was great too. Tonight they are joined by Grand Hallway, Cave Country and Buddy at the Bootleg Theater. … Then there is Rex Aquarium, who, back in the day, played alongside Silver Lakers such as Silversun Pickups, Earlimart, the Movies and a host of others. (In fact, they have a song on a compilation album released by the Fold in 2003 – check out the tracklisting). Frontman Charlie Wadhams went solo (and folk) a couple of years ago, but now that band is back, playing tonight with Nik Freitas and Rex Aquarium at the Silverlake Lounge. … And local shoegazers In Waves, fronted by Jimmy Vincent (a guitarist in Fool’s Gold) and who played the very first show this blogger ever mounted three-plus years ago, finally have their album finished. In Waves will play at Spaceland supporting Zaza. … Elsewhere: Willie Nelson at the Fred Kavli Theatre in Thousand Oaks; Spaceland on Ice: Light FM at 7 p.m. at Spaceland on Ice in downtown’s Pershing Square; Jonathan Richman at the Mint; Bebel Gilberto at the Fonda Theatre; Sean Paul at the House of Blues; Volbeat and Danko Jones at the Troubadour; and Joe Firstman and friends at the Hotel Cafe.
Obligatory promotional reminder: I’ll be continuing the countdown of Buzz Bands LA’s favorite local songs of the year at noon today on Indie1031.com.
