Ears Wide Open: The Secret 6

Long Beach quartet the Secret 6 make the kind of churning, distortion-drenched pop that launched a hundred Britpop bands, a few of whom you probably wore a black shirt for, back in the day. Fronted by ex-Killingtons singer-guitarist James Killington, the Secret 6 aren’t as archly romantic as their Anglophile forebears – no eyeliner here – but they nonetheless can carry a tune, and some emotional heft with it. Killington and bandmates Glen Coie, Jon Sacks and Shannon Madison have been busy with their monthly “Singles for Singles” series; they’ve posted seven songs for free download. The latest, “States Away,” is a chest-pumping anthem with ’80s flourishes, but I like the cheekily titled “Radio Edit” the best.
