Don Van Vliet, the musician and artist known as Captain Beefheart, died today at age 69 of complications from multiple sclerosis. See the story on RollingStone.com.

The scheduled Captain Beefheart symposium, hosted by guitarist Gary Lucas, will go on as scheduled Jan. 13 (two days before what would have been Captain Beefheart’s 70th birthday) at the Echoplex to honor the memory of Van Vliet.
