Foster the People emerged seemingly out of thin air last year with the single “Pumped Up Kicks” [previewed here], which pushed the needle on songwriter Mark Foster’s buzzmeter into the red zone and led to a record deal with Columbia. The band has spent the past six months working on recording new music, the first of which has surfaced with “Helena Beat,” a synth-strafed tune that’s likely to put FTP in good stead with fans of MGMT and Passion Pit. The song will appear on the band’s “Pumped Up Kicks” EP, out Jan. 25 via Startime International. Meanwhile, the band will flex its live muscles by playing residencies in two counties this month.
