San Diego fuzz merchants Tape Deck Mountain may get lumped into the lo-fi surf rock genre, but messages behind the shoegaze duo’s songs are anything but sunny. The title of their “Secret Serf” EP is a cheeky nod to the beach trend in SoCal’s indie rock scene; Travis Trevisan, though, wrestles with issues such as poverty and privacy instead of surfing or being lazy in the sun. Their video for opening track, “It Goes Down,” is an eerily dark collection of faces, bird masks and strobe lights that all come together for something as intense and complex as their music. “Secret Serf” came out in January via Lefse Records.
