No one said relationships were easy, and Raleigh, N.C.-based band the Rosebuds would back that statement. For a band whose origin derived from romance, it takes bravery to realize not all types of bonds can survive. Separating to save the band, Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp stepped into a territory that is both familiar and foreign on their latest album, “Loud Planes Fly Low.” Tension courses through the lyrics about their break-up, yet their musicality strengthened thanks to a healthy cathartic exchange during the making of this record. For instance, the triumph can be heard in songs such as “Woods” with a crash of drums opening the track and guitar charging through the first few measures. Howard’s vocals remain bold yet haunting, and Crisp’s voice perfectly glistens on top. It’s a pairing that has worked for the Rosebuds time and time again. Only this time raw honesty replaces any heavy metaphors. Check out director Steve Choo’s visual interpretation above.
