Ears Wide Open: John Gold

Los Angeles native John Gold crafts introspective but largely feel-good tunes that seem to twinkle like sunlight off waves. It’s taken the “writer-songsinger” (as he calls himself) a couple of albums to get noticed; his 2002 and ’05 records were DIY affairs that yielded a film placement here and a TV commercial there, along with a cult following in his hometown. Now his latest album “A Flower in Your Head” (released this month via Vagrant) should put him on the map as somebody who can hold your attention for 35 minutes after grabbing it in an episode of “Teen Wolf.” It’s material that recalls a Jason Falkner or Ben Kweller, and though the album’s electro flourishes sound as if they could have used some more polishing, there’s undeniable songcraft here, especially the track “Baby It’s Your Life,” which was was co-written with Benji Hughes.
