A night in Hollywood to spin you around:
‣ The RSVP-only It’s a School Night at Bardot is starting the new month off strong – Daniel Lanois & Rocco DeLuca, great at the Satellite a few weeks ago, headline, and L.A.’s Bleached will rock it too. Deluca, it was just announced today, has signed to 429 Records, with his new album “Drugs ’N Hymns” due in March. Most intriguing, though, is U.K. newcomer Michael Kiwanuka, who’s released two EPs on Communion Records (run by Mumford & Sons’ Ben Lovett) and who is planning a U.S. full-length in the spring. Kiwanuka was to have opened for Adele before her vocal problems scotched her tour. That’s Kiwanuka’s video for “I’m Getting Ready,” above. More? Check out the title track for his forthcoming “Home Again” EP.
And enough free Monday residencies to make you dizzy:
‣ Light FM, with a new album “Buzz Kill City” buzzing, has the Silverlake Lounge residency, and the strong opening-night lineup features Soft Pipes, Sabrosa Purr and Useless Keys. Light FM just issued free downloads of two cover songs – “AM 180” by Grandaddy and “Disarm” by Smashing Pumpkins (for whom they opened on a recent tour) on their Bandcamp page.
‣ Manhattan Murder Mystery, with an album and now a new EP out this year, take on the Satellite, with Kid Infinity, Stab City and Peg Leg Love supporting.
‣ At the Bootleg, it’s Future Dancing, with Coco Morier debuting her new project in the early set.
‣ Sixties pop purveyors Neverever have the Echo residency, supported by Cold Showers and Exploding Flowers.
‣ Free Moral Agents rock the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa.
‣ And up-and-coming electro-pop explorer Robert DeLong brings the dance to the Galaxy Theatre’s Constellation Room.
