Damin Suarez told me a while back that that Go West Young Man was going break up, but thankfully they have not. Purveyors of razor-sharp pop (and architects of a rather criminally overlooked album back in early ’09), GWYM earns high marks in pop’s old and new schools, with full-on keyboard and horn arrangements and scratchy guitar licks reminiscent of Britpop bands like the Kooks and their forebears, like Blur. The songs on GWYM’s forthcoming album are just as catchy too – Suarez knows his hooks – and lyrically “Ages” is just as sophisticated as the arrangements. Today, “to celebrate the first day of summer,” the band says, the quartet offered the first single from their new album. It’ll be hard to get out of your head.
