Stream: Chelsea Wolfe, ‘The Way We Used To’

The neurotic feel of Chelsea Wolfe’s 2011 album “Apokalypsis” was deeply rooted in its production, and its layers of instrumental and vocal effects. But the L.A.-based songstress adds by subtraction on this first song from the follow-up, “Unknown Rooms: A Collection of Acoustic Songs” (due Oct. 16 on Sargent House). To great effect, Wolfe’s virtually naked vocals are delicately layered over subtle percussion in “The Way We Used To.” Haunting, but in a different way than “Apokalypsis” was haunting. The album, recorded “in the woods of northern California” and Wolfe’s L.A. home, was co-produced by bandmate Ben Chisholm and features bassist Daniel Denton of Gothic Tropic and strong players Ezra Buchla of Gowns and Andrea Calderón.
