Ears Wide Open: Cassorla

Some may recognize Ben Cassorla as the guitarist in Gamble House. Others may have seen him on tour with the Belle Brigade or play in Bryce Dessner’s side project Clogs. His new band Cassorla, also featuring members Ross Garren on keys and harmonica and Brian Carmody on drums, however, has been getting some attention thanks to a specially formatted EP release. “Plastic” can be heard on Bandcamp, but it can also be seen on Vimeo. Each track has its own quirky music video – and they’re all made with only Microsoft Paint graphics software (and edited with Final Cut Pro). Forget the fancy lyric videos, or even Photoshop, for the matter. Cassorla spent his spare time on tour (roughly 5 to 6 hours on each) making these videos on his own computer. With Louis Fried’s direction, songs like the charmingly upbeat “Is There Something You Need” come to life through flashes of color and squiggles. Just like their music, it’s all simple but a lot of fun.
