Download: Efterklang, ‘Apples’

If you’ve been looking forward to Efterklang‘s forthcoming album, “Piramida” (due Sept. 24 via 4AD), their latest single “Apples” will stoke your anticipation even more. As the percussion gently brushes the keyboard melodies while horn arpeggios bob underneath Casper Clausen’s baritone, the 4 minute and 15 second song is a beautiful orchestration. It’s a dynamic feat considering some of these sounds don’t derive from actual instruments; strikes on protruding concrete blocks, transformed into metallic marimba, are particularly haunting. The sound on this single, as well as “The Ghost,” resonate with a darker tone when compared to bright songs off of 2010’s “Magic Chairs.” With the Danish trio recording much of the new album in an abandoned Russian settlement in Spitsbergen, an Arctic island just shy of the North Pole and home to the ghost town of Piramida, arrangements have sprung from a lonelier disposition despite majestic composition.
