When we last spotted Los Angeles duo 8mm, they had moved away from their trip-hop beginnings and segued into glossy, pop-noir territory. The sheen on their 2010 EP “Love and the Apocalypse” was no surprise – the “he” half of this husband-wife team is Sean Beavan, the Grammy-nominated producer and mixer who has worked with Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson and No Doubt, among others. Beavan and vocalist bride Juliette have expanded their palette for their new EP “Between the Devil and Two Black Hearts,” which was financed by a Kickstarter campaign that included some A-list backers, and which comes out Friday on their own ChelseaGirl Records. The single “Around the Sun” is a simmering modern-rocker, but the duo dives into rootsy music on the title track and the woozy “Everybody Says.” On “Glimmering,” Sean channels the Psychedelic Furs’ Richard Butler; then it’s back to thrashy rawk on “The One.” You get the sense the Beavans could do anything they set their minds to – without leaving their studio-equipped Laurel Canyon home.
