Download: Aaron Embry, ‘Raven’s Song’

The title of Aaron Embry’s solo debut “Tiny Prayers” takes on a whole new meaning with the recent news that his 3-year-old daughter Mayla has been diagnosed with leukemia. Friends of the singer-songwriter and producer, whose long resumé and keen devotion to his craft have made him one of the most beloved figures on the SoCal scene, are rallying to give Aaron, his wife Nikki and Mayla more than just prayers (this Oct. 3 benefit show, for instance). The album, out today on Community Music (the imprint of Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros’ Alex Ebert), offers stripped-down folk music fashioned of Embry’s lithe voice, his specially tuned tenor guitar, piano, harmonica and a rare, unaffected tenderness. With no apologies whatsoever to Neil Young, “Tiny Prayers” has a “Heart of Gold.”
