Working acoustically or electronically, Jean-Philip Grobler – aka St. Lucia – doesn’t waste time on barely-there compositions. The former choir boy from Johannesburg, South Africa, who studied music in Liverpool, England, Grobler adheres to meticulous structure in his songs, right down to the saxophone solo on the band’s debut EP. On St. Lucia’s latest EP, “September” (out now via Columbia), their sound has flourished into soaring pop gems for the dance floor. The delectable title track is a shimmering excursion just shy of six minutes long. A full-length debut is in the works with James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins, A Perfect Circle) for a release on Columbia and Neon Gold.
