The opening night of Harper Simon’s free Monday night residency at the Satellite this month lacked nothing for variety and star quality. First, there was the headliner, the son of Paul Simon, doing songs off his forthcoming album “Division Street” (due March 26) and fronting an all-star band that included Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drummer Pete Thomas, the kind of fellow who carries his own gear in and out of a club in Silver Lake. There was a show-stealing outing from Jenny O., playing songs from her debut “Automechanic.” There were harmonies and humor from the Living Sisters – Becky Stark, Eleni Mandell, Inara George and Alex Lilly. There was a between-set poetry reading from Mandy Kahn, set to a a musical score by Kennedy. And there was Stephen Sowan, closing out the night with new songs from his forthcoming album. And that’s not to mention the boggling number of fellow artists who dotted the crowded room. It figures to be one of those months during Simon’s residency.
