Ears Wide Open: Holy Folk

There a lot of cooks in Holy Folk’s kitchen – the collaboration features songwriters Keith Waggoner, Josh Caldwell, Ryan George and Jonathan Hylander (in no particular order, Les Blanks, the Voyeurs, Amateurs and Honey Loving Cells), who between them have probably done enough L.A. club gigs got earn some sort of accreditation. Begun as the side project of Waggoner and Caldwell (who released an EP, “Heavy Hands,” in 2011), the addition of George and Hylander has resulted in the decision to elevate the project from studio-only status and to finish the full-length “Motioning” (out June 18 via Silver Side). The album goes through a lot of folky mood swings – playful, dreamy, biting, melancholy – and somewhere in “Motioning’s” nifty harmonies and comfortably orchestrated sheen are four guys who still believe in the power of a song.
