Chelsea Wolfe arrived to the L.A. music scene equipped with a gothic sheen that would ease listeners into her morose reality. Her pop noir initially seemed a Stevie Nicks prototype but as she followed up her 2010 debut “The Grime and the Glow” with 2011’s howling “Apokalypsis” and then last year’s “Unknown Rooms: A Collection of Acoustic Songs,” it was clear that Wolfe had created a world for herself where the darkness almost sounded tragically painful. Perhaps that’s why her forthcoming and fourth studio album is duly titled “Pain Is Beauty,” and why her mystique has taken on an electro-pop pulse. New songs like “The Warden” are more dance floor-friendly than older songs such as “Moses” will ever be, but Wolfe’s new material doesn’t lose the otherworldly aspect to her craft. After all, the new record is a “love letter to nature” and her honesty, no matter how grim it may be, is still the appeal here. “Pain Is Beauty” is slated for a Sept. 3 release via Sargent House.
