The 1975 have a Manchester mailing address, but that doesn’t mean much these days, right? They could sound like anything, and they do. Some of it is even memorable. Rather than cling to any one aesthetic, the band’s self-titled debut – coming Sept. 10 on Vagrant – promises to be a sonically diverse affair, elecro-spiked art-rock one minute and robot-powered R&B the next. At their most humdrum, the 1975 toss off sugary soul and pop nuggets seemingly culled from the so-what stages of the 1980s. And they occasionally devolve to hip-hop lite and its perils: tweaked vocals and riddims lifted from bros in knit beanies. When singer Matthew Healy and crew think big, though, they can muster arena energy. Let’s steal some Two Door Cinema Club fans and start a party, OK? With songs like “Sex” and “Chocolate,” it’s sure to rage.
