Just scratching the surface, really, of Thursday’s highlights:
‣ The Sunset Strip Music Festival kicks off at the House of Blues with a Tribute to Joan Jett, who joins past honorees Ozzy Osbourne, Slash, Motley Crue and the Doors as the recipient of the Elmer Valentine Award. Joan Jett & the Blackhearts will perform as well.
‣ It’s the Australia Rocks the Pier edition of the Twilight Concert Series at the Santa Monica Pier, and singer-songwriter Xavier Rudd [pictured] brings the evocative songs off his latest album “Spirit Bird” to the beach for the free show. Nikki Jensen opens.
‣ El-P and Killer Mike, as Run the Jewels, converge on the Echoplex to perform songs off their new album on Fool’s Gold, and apparently Mr. Killums, who stars in the video “36″ Chain,” above, is on tour with them.
‣ Son Volt headlines the Troubadour behind its new album “Honky Tonk.”
‣ And local dream-pop band Haunted Summer celebrates its new video release at the Satellite, supported by Tashaki Miyaki, yOya and the Eagle Rock Gospel Singers.
