Coachella 2014: Jagwar Ma, right band, wrong time

Who:Â Jagwar Ma in the Gobi tent
In 3 or Fewer Words:Â Howlin’ at daytime
Memorable Because:Â Perhaps the band with the most unfortunate of set times, Jagwar Ma (comprised of producer Jono Ma, singer-guitarist Gabriel Winterfield and bass guitarist Jack Freeman) absolutely slayed their afternoon gig – it was as if they were headlining the main stage. The Australian Madchester-happy trio pulled out all the stops with their baggy beats and psychedelic-drenched melodies during songs such as “Uncertainty,” “Man I Need,” “Come and Save Me” and ultimate closer, “The Throw.” Elements swirled and banged around; Winterfield had stripped down to just his pants – which looked like they were actually plucked from the ’90s – by the end of the set and literally collapsed on stage from his own pure adrenaline. This would have been a stellar set for 8 p.m. slot or later, but hey, there were no glow sticks needed here. Jagwar Ma is beyond that type of tomfoolery.
What I’d Tell My Friend Who Was At A$AP Ferg:Â I don’t trust acts with dollar signs in their name … and they brought out A$AP Rocky? Double the dollar signs, double the waste of time. (I guess I assumed wrong when people didn’t learn from the sad existence of Ke$ha.)
