Coachella 2014: The masses vote with their feet, which keep moving and moving and moving

You imagine that the God of Rock ’n’ Roll, taking a break from tuning his Telecaster, cast a wary glance upon the thousands who descended Friday on the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. “Relax, children, it’s just a drumbeat,” He said. “And most of the time it’s not even made by a drum.”
Indeed, dance music ruled Day 1 of Coachella, from the tents that were bursting at the seams for sets by Jagwar Ma and Bastille, to the body-slamming volume of the Sahara Tent where the Glitch Mob and Zedd were buzzing, to the underground sounds of the Do Lab and the Yuma Tent, to the 1-2-3 Main Stage punch of Chromeo, Girl Talk and OutKast to finish the night.
A postcard-perfect day gave us a chance to explore some of Coachella’s visual stimulation, including artist Philip K. Smith’s “Reflection Field” (top photo), which was not only ideal for daytime selfies but illuminated and changed colors at night. Above is a random gallery from Day 1, including the sad tale of the stilt walker who was excused from the Sahara Tent for trying to one-up everybody.
Our coverage of selected sets follows throughout the morning.

Nice pics, nice piece. Slight correction in that God/Lemmy was playing, and not tuning, his Rickenbacker bass, and as he’s visiting the festival next week, it was probably more of a warm wink.
(and someone most definitely tunes it for him.)
