Coachella 2014: Woodkid, foreign filmic

Who: Woodkid in the Gobi Tent
In 3 or Fewer Words: A spectacular run
Memorable Because: Frenchman Yoann Lemoine made his mark directing huge videos for the likes of Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey and Mystery Jets. He began his electronic music project Woodkid as a DIY affair (those incedible Woodkid videos were black-and-white for budgetary reasons more than aesthetic). The songs on the album “The Golden Age” wrestle with morality and identity, infused as they are with big drama. If you’re familiar the levity of the record, his Coachella set came off as a little bit celebratory – hey, it’s a festival, after all – but its cinematic qualities (lots of smoke, great background visuals) made it riveting. He was backed by dual drummers (who made a helluva racket), two synth/keyboard players and a three-man live horn section. Most of us loved it. The guy wearing the “Arcade Fuhrer” T-shirt didn’t.
What I’d Tell My Friend Who Was At The Glitch Mob: You got a different kind of spctacle, right?
