Coachella 2014: Pharrell Williams, tip of the hat

Who:Â Pharrell Williams at the Outdoor Theater
In 3 or Fewer Words:Â DJs with humans
Memorable Because: If you’ve ever doubted the talent or work ethic of Pharrell Williams, his solo debut at Coachella (he played with N.E.R.D back in 2003) was simply an impressive showcase of all the songs he has produced, written or collaborated on as a feature vocalist over the last decade. Although the majority of his set were songs by other artists, he did remind fans that he did have a hit billed under his name when he performed “Frontin’.” But the highlight of Williams’ set was the plethora of specials guest who came out during their respective songs. Within the first half, Williams had already brought out Nelly (“Hot in Herre”), Snoop Dogg (“Drop It Like It’s Hot,” “Beautiful”), Tyler the Creator, Puff Daddy and Busta Rhymes (“Pass the Courvoisier”). Crowd favorites, however, were Diplo and Gwen Stefani (“Hollaback Girl”). What most DJs do with their laptops, Williams did with humans. The only downside to Williams’ set was the unfortunate proof that he is more of a studio vocalist than a live vocalist. He may have blamed the dust and the wind for his lack of strong vocals, but this wasn’t the first time Williams failed to maintain stamina. Despite his complaints, he did manage to close his set out with what the fans were waiting for. “Happy” nearly made up for his performance as the massive crowd clapped and danced along;  if that didn’t do it then at least fans were reassured that he still loves his Arby’s Vivienne Westwood hat.
What I’d Tell My Friend Who Was At Darkside:Â I wasn’t in the mood for anything dark; I was in the mood for “Happy.”
