Singer-songwriter LP was one of the best things we saw at SXSW in 2012, and she was stealing club shows all over L.A. the year before that, so it smacks of fussiness that it’s taken this long for her to release her debut album. But here it is, “Forever for Now,” out next week via Warner in all its meticulous glory. Produced by Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Dave Matthews Band, among others), “Forever For Now” sprawls across myriad classic influences, glued together by LP’s voice, a singular, powerful, multi-hued instrument. She wields a mean ukulele and is a kick-ass whistler too, but the diminutive singer – who paid her dues as a songwriter-for-hire for the likes of Rihanna, Cher, Christina Aguilera and the Backstreet Boys – proves adept at the tug-of-war between deeply evocative vocal lines and the orchestration that frames them. To these songs’ credit, you’d like every one just as much if it were just LP and her uke. Here you get them all dolled up.
