Ears Wide Open: Phantoms

Los Angeles-based duo Phantoms is composed of Kyle Kaplan and Vinnie Pergola, both of whom come from musical backgrounds. Kaplan’s uncle toured with Michael Jackson and played keys, stirring Kyle’s interest in bass, while Pergola’s father was a rhythm guitarist who helped encourage Vinnie’s interest in drumming. Inspired by artists such as Daniel Avery, Justice, The Knife and Soulwax, Phantoms’ music is house-y dance-pop that is dark, lush and pulsing with rhythm. Their first single, “Broken Halo,” features the soulful vocals of Nicholas Braun over an engaging and infectious beat textured with percussion, sweeping synths and a rippling undercurrent of bass. The accompanying music video, directed by Ace Norton, follows the saddest bride since “Melancholia” as she flees the altar, shacks up with a former lover, steals a motorcycle and pounds a lot of liquor on her way into the desert. The duo are currently recording their full-length album, due out in 2015.
