Stream: Two Gallants, ‘Incidental’

Like its title, Two Gallants‘ new single “Incidental” is just that. Or so the undiscerning ear may assume. The grungy blues track is a swift 2 1/2 minutes of ragged vocals and melodic guitar that swirls in circles unpredictably with a relieving bridge. While the duo maintains their muscular musicianship, “Incidental” is a rock spasm that hits home if you dive into the metaphors that make up the theme of their new album “We Are Undone.” A nostalgic commentary on San Francisco past and present (in the timeline of Two Gallants, which commenced in 2002), “Incidental” offers the idea of trying to make a difference but remaining virtually insignificant as Adam Stephens sings, “She had rusty hinges, I forgot my scalpel / She had indecision, I was incidental.” The instrumental keel may be familiar to local L.A. music aficionados but I’ll consider that a respective nod to an impeccable melody. “We Are Undone” is out this week on ATO Records.
