Having recently made as many headlines for their (decidedly) ill-advised band name as their music, Canadian rockers Viet Cong decamped at the Echoplex on Friday night for a show that originally was scheduled for the smaller Echo upstairs. The band — Matt Flegel, Mike Wallace, Scott Munro and Daniel Christiansen — brought with them the bleak but beautiful music on their self-titled debut (which came out Jan. 20 on Jagjaguwar), along with a sense of humor. Flegel brought out a black bag as the band took the stage and handed fans various items, including a banana and a PBR. Their set started slowly but built in intensity throughout, and by the time they ended with a long instrumental jam, a healthy mosh pit had formed in front of the stage. Fellow Canadians Freak Heat Waves supported, with local standouts Heathers kicking off the night.
