Another ill-advised band name bites the dust: Canadian post-punk outfit Viet Cong, who in January released one of the best rock albums of the year, announced earlier this week they will be changing their band name.
In a statement on Facebook, the band — Matt Flegel, Mike Wallace, Scott Munro and Daniel Christiansen — said that over the past year “we’ve been listening, talking and having lots of valuable conversations with the members of the Vietnamese community about the name. Through this dialogue and hearing about what the name means to so many people, we have decided we will be changing the name of our band.”
The band has been under fire for their insensitive appropriation of the name of the Southeast Asian political and military group that fought U.S. and South Vietnamese forces during the Vietnam War. Ultimately, the quartet decided, “We are a band who want to make music and play our music for our fans. We are not here to cause pain or remind people of atrocities of the past.”
The new name has not yet been decided on, they added. “We rushed into our last band name decision, we don’t plan to rush into this one,” the band said, “but know that will be rolling out a new name as soon as we agree upon one.
