Coachella 2015: Built to Spill, untethered and, regrettably, underattended

Who: Built to Spill at the Outdoor Theatre
In 3 or Fewer Words: Where is everybody?
Memorable Because: If Built to Spill can’t attract a midday festival crowd then maybe there really is no hope for classic indie-rock bands at Coachella. After all, they are the closest thing 1990s dad rock has to a jam band. The noodley, layered guitar grooves and crushing crescendos of Doug Martsch and whoever else was in the lineup this week should have been a perfect entry point for wayward Mollied millennials, but alas. A “Goin’ Against Your Mind” / “Stab” one-two combo was especially delectable just as the sinking sun relented. Built to Spill’s new album, made with a new lineup, is called “Untethered Moon,” and it comes out next week. Excellent set for anyone who bothered.
What I’d Tell My Friend Who Was at St. Lucia: Built to Spill was canonized by the time St. Lucia was in middle school.
