Who: The Cribs in the Gobi Tent
In 3 or Fewer Words: Hey, scenesters!
Memorable Because: “How many people here came to Coachella to see us in 2010?” singer-guitarist Ryan Jarman asked the light crowd in the Gobi. A few hands shot up. “We’re worry we didn’t make it — we tried everything.” It was an audacious apology, since the sibling trio — then a quartet boasting Johnny Marr as their fourth member — were a no-show through no fault of their own. Volcanic ash from an eruption in Iceland disrupted air travel that year, causing a handful of cancellations by bands who had to fly in from Europe. On Sunday, the Cribs proved they can still be explosive, but it was hard not feel their moment had past. They released a strong new album, “For All My Sisters,” in March, a slightly new iteration (it was produced by Ric Ocasek) of the signature jagged garage-rock that put them on the map, and they blasted through four songs from it in this set, including highlights “Burning for No One” and “Ivory Hand.” Hearing the Jarmans dispense all their attitude on “Our Bovine Public” (2007) still resonates, but they didn’t play their 2004 anthem “Hey, Scenesters!” Somebody, if not the Cribs, ought to play that one at every Coachella.
