Formed just two years ago, London indie-pop quintet The Mispers hit their native U.K. like a sugar rush — they were selling out shows after a year on the scene. A “misper” is police slang describing a missing person, but with the band’s approachable sound full of driving rhythms and feel-good melodies, they are likely to be universally found quite soon. Fronted by Jack Balfour Scott with his stressed-but-melodic voice, the band have snagged their audiences with strong hooks and high-energy live performances. Their first EP titled “Dark Bits” came out nearly a year ago, and their new single “Weekend,” released in April, has garnered worthy buzz with its shining synth and layered vocals. The Mispers have a knack for emotive and lush summer tracks, making them sound like a lovechild between MGMT and Arcade Fire. While they could be at the mercy of the British music hype machine, what they do is undeniably yet complex. They can move from emotional and stringed acoustic tracks into loud and howling rock with folk sensibilities (thanks in part to violinist Hannah van den Brul) — new directions that seem to lead to the same dynamic sound which is sure to be refined on their debut album due this year. Having finally made their way across the pond, they do their second L.A. show tonight.
