Video: The Garden, ‘All Smiles Over Here :)’

The video to “All Smiles Over Here :)” begins auspiciously. The Garden appears in a car waving a flag with the words “Vada Vada” scrawled on it. No smiling at all. What follows is a series of whimsically morbid images punctuating absurdist instructions delivered by the song, with twins Wyatt and Fletcher Shears looking serious with noodles flying everywhere. It could be easily consumed as weird, attractive, punk stuff, but there’s substance beyond the fashion. Like nouveau Dadaists, they spit on rationalism, creating sense out of nonsense, embracing the absurd through tangential thoughts and stripped down forceful music—and, in fact, they have their own philosophy, this “Vada Vada.” The Garden’s Wyatt Shears says the term refers to “an idea that represents pure creative expression that disregards all previously made genres and ideals.” Expect more of the unexpected on the duo’s new album “Haha,” to be released via Burger/Epitaph on Oct. 9.
