Video: Villagers, ‘Hot Scary Summer’

Are we anything more than clouds of particles floating through the cartoon canyon of life on our path to rejoin the stars? That’s what comes across in the “Hot Scary Summer” video, directed by Hi-Sim for Villagers. The only bad thing about this video is that it ends. It’s so relaxing, I wish it were a screensaver in the best possible way, endlessly scrolling through different landscapes. Only, every moment would be accompanied by the sad strum of a love song about the monsters we become in relationships. That’s OK, too. There’s a reason Conor O’Brien’s (pre-Villagers) albums “Becoming a Jackal” and “Awayland” were nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. He’s a good, unique songwriter. The way the lyrics tumble out on “Hot Scary Summer” is a testament to his poetics. The song comes from Villagers‘ most recent album, “Darling Arithmetic.” Go pick it up and get a cathartic earful of relationship woes.
