Favored Nations

The “I Can See You” video suggests that this very song will restore lost memories. As we enter a girl named Cecilia’s mind, which is a mountain range of pink digital peaks, we find plants, chunks of fool’s gold, a pineapple in a disco ball, a playing card with a bunny, nice cars, a kitten, puzzle pieces, and other clues. The mystery involves another pretty girl, and when all seems lost to outer space in a conch shell, Cecilia awakes with a love of pineapple cake and her memory restored. Created by Australian director Nima Nabili Rad, the video is as clever, good-looking, and strange as my description suggests. A good one for Favored Nations, the Australian/Los Angelean electronic trio consisting of James Curd (DFA), Morgan Phalen (formerly of Diamond Nights), and Surahn Sidhu (Empire of the Sun guitarist whose writing credits include Usher and Kimbra). The band’s debut album “The Great Unknown” came out this September on Los Angeles label Antler Records. Cool credits aside, the trio crafts funky, clean cuts, well suited for raising your heart rate and hypnotizing pretty girls, which are not mutually exclusive activities.
