Grimes finds that Los Angeles affords the right landscape for her music in the self-directed video for “Flesh Without Blood/Life in the Vivid Dream.” A place where aristocrats with purple hair and bloody mouths dance around on pink tennis courts, and play with their friends in bedrooms that look like the inside of cupcakes, and they’re invited to spaghetti dinners beneath chandeliers where jumping on the posh booth cushions is acceptable, if not expected, behavior, here is where a dead looking angel sits on a dry hillside and gets in touch with feelings. The two songs presented showcase the spectrum of sound found on her new album, “Art Angels,” out Nov. 6 on 4AD. From upbeat, empowered highs to broody, sensitive, strummed lows, the album was written and recorded entirely by Grimes, aka Claire Elise Boucher, with live piano, guitar and violin peppered throughout the production. It’s new, exciting territory for this alien to explore.
