The new single from Lush — their first new music in 20 years — is every bit as transcendent as longtime fans of the U.K. dream-pop torchbearers might have hoped. Belying its title, “Out of Control” possesses the measured majesty of Lush’s early shoegazing. The song is the lead track on the four-song EP “Blind Spot,” out April 22, and recorded last summer with Jim Abbiss (Adele, Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys) and Daniel Hunt (Ladytron) at Abbiss’ Lime Green Monkey studio. “Once we were in the studio, everything came together incredibly quickly,” says Miki Berenyi, who with Emma Anderson founded Lush in 1988. In January, 4AD released a five-disc boxed set “Chorus,” a compilation of Lush’s three full-lengths, a mini-album, EPs and singles. In the announcement of the new EP, bassist Phil King says: “I know I’m biased, but I work for a music magazine and so much of the music I hear played in the office sounds non-descript or derivative. Emma has this way of writing unusual chord changes and manages to weave lovely melodies over the top, and it immediately sounds distinctive, like Lush.” Martin Andersen directs the new video.
