First-wave Britpop/shoegaze fans’ heads exploded when Miki Berenyi unveiled via Twitter the supergroup Piroshka, comprised of Berenyi (Lush), KJ “Moose” McKillop (Moose), bassist Mick Conroy (Modern English) and drummer Justin Welch (Elastica). As the shimmery dust settles, Piroshka release their first offering to the world, the sparkling “Everlastingly Yours.” Adverb and reverb lovers alike can indulge in the synergy of the new creation, with signature sounds from all bands combined into a jewel box of a tune. Berenyi’s unmistakably smooth voice, Moose’s bright yet laid-back guitar jangles and chord progressions, Conroy’s fuzz bass and Welsh’s explosive drums that drive the song full speed ahead are the striking match for the group’s first album, “Brickbat,” out Feb. 15 via Bella Union.
It was all seemingly meant to be. Welch drummed for Lush’s recent reunion shows in the absence of the late Chris Acland, and aside from Modern English, Conroy has been a latter-day member of Moose and filled in on bass for the last Lush show. Of the band’s incarnation, Berenyi says, “After the Manchester [final Lush reunion] show, Justin asked if I’d be up for something else, but I’d never made music outside of Lush, and I’ve never wanted to do anything solo. I need someone else to motivate me, and in this case it was Justin. He sent drum tracks with guitar parts and odd words, so I wrote some vocals and lyrics, which became ‘This Must Be Bedlam’ and ‘Never Enough.’ When Mick added bass, it sounded great. When Moose added guitar and keyboards – I’d never written like that before, it was such good fun.”
For instant mood elevation, welcome Piroshka to your life (and ears) today.
