The Kills have announced that their much-anticipated fifth LP, “Ash & Ice,” will be released June 3 (via Domino Records). Fans have been salivating for a follow-up to 2011’s “Blood Pressures” for quite some time now, but the duo has been busy in the meantime. Jamie Hince was recovering from five hand surgeries, resulting in his having to re-learn how to play guitar with a permanently damaged finger. Hince took a trip on the Trans-Siberian Express for inspiration and Mosshart remained in her Nashville home writing lyrics for “Ash & Ice” and recording a new album with that other guy’s band, the Dead Weather.

The Kills recorded in L.A. and at Electric Lady Studios in New York, with Hince and John O’Mahony (Metric and the Cribs) producing. Lead single “Doing it to Death” is the first taste of what’s to come from the band’s new album. The bluesy track is laced with heavy guitars and stomping rhythms with Mosshart’s suave rasp growling, “we’re hanging up / we’re double-sixing it / night after night / doing it to death.” The video, directed by Wendy Morgan, features Hince and Mosshart as the most sophisticated hood ornaments ever seen on a Lincoln Continental amidst a choreographed funeral procession. Never has a funeral seemed so enticing, proving that the Kills are forever cooler than the rest of us.
