On their debut EP “Total Fvcker,” L.A. trio TV Heads excel at using their loud/soft, pretty/grating dynamics as sonic metaphors. “Chin Up,” with its genteel build-up to a vein-bulging chorus, is exemplary, and the band’s description of director Ian Midgley’s video for the song nails it: “An exploration of the lurid, self-gazing culture of gratification, set against the backdrop of a sickeningly sweet, candy-smeared Los Angeles.” Yeah, that.

The video pits the band — Sean Galloway, Angelica Tavella and Vincent Gutierrez (nnow joined live by drummer Jessica Lankford) — against a group of masked, furry creeps. “The video expresses a kind of horror at the environment of the listener,” says Midgley, whose credits include the Ableton documentary “Team Supreme: Strength in Numbers.” “The energy of calm between the verse and chorus suggested a desire to find balance, but in the end there is no way to find balance, the the listener succumbs, while injecting the usual unsettling sexual undertones we all appreciate.”
