“Just google ‘Drugdealer’ and ‘Los Angeles,’ it’ll probably come up.” These are not the best instructions, from a recent conversation at a bar regarding cool new albums to check out. After a brief pause, everyone was laughing because the first things that come up with that search have nothing to do with avant-garde soft jams. The debut Drugdealer album is called “The End Of Comedy,” released by Weird World on Sept. 9. Created by Michael Collins, formerly of Run DMT, Silk Rhodes and Salvia Plath, the songs have a timeless sense of slowed down reality, like he’s channeling Carole King and Burt Bacharach through hits of lysergic acid. Everything sounds normal and straight, but it’s like disguised psychedelia. Peppered throughout are vocal contributions from Ariel Pink, Danny James and Natalie Mering (Weyes Blood), and musicianship from his friends, members of Mac DeMarco’s band, Regal Degal, Holy Shit!, Mild High Club, and Mr. Twin Sister. Watch Christina Von Neissen drive around L.A. in the new “Easy To Forget” video (which also features Sofia Karchi, Shags Chamberlain, and Benjamin Brown), and then enjoy the prettiness of “Suddenly” with Natalie Mering.
