Few bands extract the emotional or dynamic range out of shoegazing as The Besnard Lakes, the Montreal band whose fifth album “A Coliseum Complex Museum” came out early this year on Jagjaguwar. The album was conceived by the husband-and-wife core of the band at its namesake Besnard Lake in rural Saskatchewan — on this trip, threatened by a nearby forest fire. Between that and the band’s predisposition toward the dark and paranormal, it make for a wild album. Dreamy, heavy, pretty, proggy — it’s all strikingly cinematic.
