Drinking Flowers

When we first encountered Drinking Flowers around 2013, they were playing a sound they called “apocalyptic pop,” which drew mostly from psych and garage elements. Their 2016 album, “New Swirled Order,” moved in a post-punk direction, and the new songs they’ve been casually dropping online reveals their pop evolution has embraced the dance floor. It’s not a shocking turn, in fact it seems quite natural given the instruments and social settings this band enjoys. Alex Galindo says, “We’ve been exploring a new direction for some time now. We’re interested in making music or art that elicits a physical response. Emotions come second; we’re interested in the primal these days.”

Their latest single, “I Can’t Dance,” builds upon a moveable synthesizer riff, with samples and other lines dropping in and out of this mostly instrumental cut. It does what they intended, commanding the body rather than the mind. “Boredom really prompted the song. We wanted less singing and guitars and more mashing up of sampled vocals and sounds. Sometimes (a lot of the times) you get tired of your own voice. I think this song is a reflection of shifting tastes. We just like dance music and want to cram as many ideas we as can down the throat of that formula.”

They planted an easter egg at the end of the song, a buried vocal delivers the song’s message:  “I can’t dance, but I can feel it.”
