Ears Wide Open: Kingsbury

“Alone Again,” the new single from synth-pop songstress Kingsbury, isn’t a sad song. Instead, it owes its sugary bounce to the feeling of rebirth that the singer-songwriter — full name, Caroline Kingsbury — felt upon moving from Nashville to Los Angeles. She had attended Belmont University and sang backup for bands such as the Mitchells, before leaving behind the city and the folk music she had made under the name the Red Headed Indian. The song, she says, “was about a season of immense change and learning to be honest with myself about my desires as I made the move. … The act of physically moving away from everything that was comfortable liberated me and jolted me into the realization that I was having a hard time differentiating between what other people wanted for me and what I wanted for myself. I realized that pleasing the people around me was an innate part of my character, and that I had to actively fight that to be able to pursue the life I wanted.” The single is the follow-up to two songs the Florida native released last year, “Easy” and “Emeralds,” which won her attention online.
